Counselling Skills for Difficult Situations

Overview

Learn how to develop emotional intelligence and foster skills in conflict management and apply them through your previous learning.

Foundational Counselling Skills 3 (FCS103) will present you with a range of exercises and experiential work to encourage embodiment of the skills in your life. Suitable for anyone wanting to improve communication and relational skills, This course will introduce a conflict model through which to work with difficult situations. The work is applicable to dealing with difficult people as well as embarking on your own holistic counselling career. This course is the third of four Foundational Counselling Skills courses on offer

Outline

Delivery

This course is run by industry professionals and is highly engaging and interactive. As a relational course where enhanced communication is crucial, it was necessary to create a community atmosphere where the students also benefit from peer learning. The delivery is online over 8 weeks, including a two-day workshop. Content is built and opened weekly with interaction through the online forums

CONSULTATION TIMES

This course runs over 8 weeks - 3.5 hours a week - 4 hours assessment - guided and experiential learning throughout. Total hours of commitment is 32 hours. Simple yet valuable communication skills that are learnt and embodied throughout the course.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this unit, students will be able to:

a) A developed understanding of a holistic oriented approach where the focus is on the whole person


b) Experiential development of inner and outer awareness in difficult situations


c) Basic understanding of Process Oriented Psychology (aka 'Process Work' - Arnold Mindell) and the 3 x levels of awareness


d) The importance of confidentiality and power dynamics within a therapeutic relationship


e) A developing understanding of internal and external conflict. Recognising other's in conflict and the basics of working with another's conflict.
